If at first you don’t succeed….
Hats off to Lex XI who yesterday finally won their first league game of the season – at the 30th and final attempt!
The Lawmen defeated Corwen 2-1 at Stansty Park to ensure their previously fruitless campaign in Tier 3 Ardal North East did not go unrewarded.
Bottom of the table with four draws and 25 defeats in their 29 matches, the final act of the campaign was even more exciting given the Wrexham side won in stoppage time.
In the final moments of the final game, the first team managed to secure a well deserved first league win of the season to go out on a high against a strong Corwen side.
The game started with early chances for both sides with Joise Fernandes striking first to put the Lawmen 1-0 up in the 11th minute.
The first half continued with Lex having the better of the chances but disappointingly failing to add to their lead.
In the 44th minute Corwen were awarded a controversial goal from Oliver Crimp after the officials deemed the ball to have crossed the line despite a fantastic double save from Joey Jones.
At half time the Lex boys rallied and came out to face an energised Corwen side who had changed shape and looked to take the game to the hosts.
The second half was limited to a couple of decent chances for each side with either failing to capitalise, that man again Joey Jones denied Corwen with a wonder save from a shot destined for the top corner around the 70th minute.
Lex settled into the second half and enjoyed most of the possession but it seemed it would be another one of those days, that was until super sub Georgie Baxter hit a shot in off the far post to send the Lex sideline into raptures and end the season with a well deserved win and allowed for an enjoyable awards evening in the Crown in Summerhill.
The award winners were Bradley Wynne who picked up the Clubman award, Joey Jones who received both Managers and Players Player awards and Rudi Suckley received best young player (all pictured above).
Lex now look forward to a well deserved break and season of local football in Tier 4 after what will hopefully be a good pre-season.
