Caersws crashed Gresford Athletic’s homecoming and left Clappers Lane with a morale boosting 2-0 victory.
Goals in either half secured victory for the Bluebirds, plus the confirmation of Tier 2 football for next season.
Having led a nomadic existence for the past few seasons, Gresford secured a return to their spiritual patch for their final home game of the 2025-26.
A healthy crowd was still filing in when the visitors struck early. Seeing goalkeeper Lewis Dutton off his line, Craig Harris weighted his chipped effort perfectly, finding the net from 50 yards.
With Storm David making its presence known, Caersws attempted a route one approach. Tommy Rowlands brought down the ball straight from a goal kick and his wind assisted half volley whistled inches wide.
Dutton redeemed himself by going full flight to turn over Rhys Hesden’s effort, before staying on his line to tip a Rowlands lob over the bar. At the other end, Thomas Smith did well to pick out teammate Elliott Orton in space, but visiting goalkeeper Max Williams was equal to Orton’s low attempt from close range.
Caersws struck early once again in the second half to seal the victory. Captain Harry Cottam took full advantage of poor marking to go box to box, before collecting a through ball from Tom Edwards and coolly tucking a low shot underneath Dutton.
An improvised boxing celebration was well thought out. In truth, that proved to be the knockout blow which floored Gresford’s challenge.
Two almost became three, but Sam Phillips mis-kicked a Hesden pull back, allowing a relieved Gresford defence to clear.
Gresford struggled to impose much of an attacking impetus on the game. Toby Gallagher’s searching free kick almost picked out the head of teammate Daniel Wood, but the away side cleared the ball behind.
From the resulting corner, home substitutes Caelan McGovern and Alex Burton both failed to get any change out of a resolute Caersws rearguard, with several shots successfully blocked.
