Pair of shocks in NEWFA Challenge Cup

Goalkeeper Josh Edwards was a hero for Queen’s Park

NEWFA Senior Challenge Cup round four

FC Queen’s Park 1 (Tony Jones pen 39)
Llay Welfare 1 (Cavan Daley 20)
FC Queen’s Park won 4-1 on penalties

An upset at Queensway Stadium saw Tier 4 Queen’s Park make it 17 straight wins in all competitions as they knocked third-tier visitors Llay out of the NEWFA Challenge Cup.
The Park progressed on penalties to advance to the quarter-finals.
Arran Taylor’s Wrexham-based side took on a very strong Welfare who sit fourth in Ardal North West.
It was a tough contest for both teams. Llay opened the scoring through Cavan Daley on 20 minutes, but courage and determination from Jake Morris won the hosts a crucial penalty with 39 on the clock.
Veteran Tony Jones stepped up and smashed it into the back of the net to level the game before half-time.
The second half was goalless but full of action, with both sides pushing for a winner. With nothing to separate the teams, the match went to penalties.
A huge shootout performance from keeper Josh Edwards ensured the Park won 4-1 on spot kicks.

Curtis Neary was man of the match for the Park

Park’s penalty scorers were:

Connah’s Quay Town 0
Mold Alexandra 0
Connah’s Quay Town won 4-1 on penalties

There was another cup shock on Tuesday night as Tier 3 Connah’s Quay Town eliminated Cymru North side Mold Alexandra at Deeside Stadium.
Just like with the Queen’s Park tie the night before, the game went to penalties and Quay ran out 4-1 winners.
A hard-fought contest produced no goals so it went to spot-kicks and Ryan Hewitt, Edward Brown, Harry Brown and captain Leon Bennett all converted to see Town through,
Goalkeeper Elliott Jones was a hero for the home side.

Other round four ties scheduled

March 21: Penyffordd Lions v Saltney Town
March 24: Gresford Athletic v Airbus UK Broughton, Hawarden Rangers v Holywell Town, Mynydd Isa v Buckley Town, Ruthin Town v Lex XI
