30 up! Bangor City 1876’s unbeaten run reaches impressive new milestone

ARDAL NORTH WEST – FRIDAY, JANUARY 23

Connah’s Quay Town 1 (James 30)

CPD Dinas Bangor City 1876 3 (Hughes 9 & 50, McGonigle 35)

Captain Iolo Hughes led by example as his first two goals of the season inspired Bangor City 1876 to make it 30 games without loss in 2025-26.

Friday’s win at Deeside Stadium was 1876’s seventh in a row in Ardal North West and put them six points clear of second-place Porthmadog, the pair having played the same number of games.

City expected a tough test at Town and so it proved with the visitors holding just a 2-1 advantage at half time.

Defender Hughes struck first for Michael Johnston’s side in the ninth-minute from a Cai Owen assist.

However, the hosts pulled level on the half-hour through Lewis James.

Five minutes later, goal number 26 of the season for Corrog McGonigle, who has now scored in four successive matches, ensured the blues were ahead at the interval, Cai Powell Roberts with the assist.

Five minutes into the second half Hughes, who had not scored previously before tonight since netting in a 3-2 defeat at Penrhyncoch last October, made it 3-1 from a Josh Carey supply.

And 3-1 was how it stayed, Bangor now having just over a week to prepare for their huge JD Welsh Cup quarter-final against Caerau Ely at Bangor City Stadium on January 31.
