FOOTBALL: New North Wales ‘Reserve Super League’ pops up from seemingly nowhere!

Llandudno won the FAW Reserve League North West title and cup double last season

A new reserve league has seemingly appeared from nowhere on the North Wales football scene.

This weekend’s fixture list includes games in the FAW NATIONAL RESERVE LEAGUE NORTH.

The new competition appears to be an amalgamation of last season’s FAW Reserve League North East and North West.

For 2025-26, all the teams have been lobbed together under the same umbrella. No regionalisation.

It is believed the league will be an under-21s competition where teams can have up to 4 overage players in the squad and on the field at any time.

This newly-named league may be common knowledge, but as someone who goes to great lengths to cover all North Wales senior football, I have to say I had not heard about it until yesterday, when I checked the weekend fixtures.

Poor show again from the FAW, who I thought might have put out a ‘press release’ on the league.

Do they actually want publicity? Seems not.

Anyway, the FAW NATIONAL RESERVE LEAGUE NORTH will comprise 16 teams

Airbus UK Broughton Reserves

Bala Town Under-21s

Buckley Town Reserves

CPD Y Rhyl 1879 Reserves

Colwyn Bay Under-21s

Connah’s Quay Nomads Under-18s

Datblygu Dinas Bangor City 1876 Development

Denbigh Town Reserves

Gresford Athletic Development

Holywell Town Development Squad

Llandudno FC

Llanrwst United Reserves

Mynydd Isa FC Development

NFA Under-23s

Porthmadog FC Development

Ruthin Town Reserves

It appears the FAW have created a sort of Reserve Super League under its banner, mainly catering for ‘bigger’ clubs.

Meanwhile, some of the teams which were in either the FAW Reserve League East or West last season have now been placed in area leagues.

The North East Wales League will run two Reserve divisions this season, while the North Wales Coast plan for reserve football has not yet been released, but it appears the Development league of the past two seasons with continue.
