FEATURE: North Wales Women’s League East Division title battle promises to be a thriller

Airbus and Henllan (green) are right in the mix for the East Division title

The battle to win the North Wales League East Division title has to be one of the most exciting in Welsh women’s football.

Berriew’s 4-2 win over CPDM Henllan on Sunday really blew the championship race wide open.

With each side playing 12 matches in the seven-team league, here is how the current top four stand.

1 CPD Merched Henllan – Played 8 Points 16 Goal Difference +47
2 Berriew – Played 6 Points 15 GD +23
3 Airbus – Played 6 Points 13 GD +25
4 Denbigh Town – Played 6 Points 12 GD +19

REMAINING FIXTURES

CPDM Henllan

Feb 23: Northop Hall (a)

Mar 9: Berriew (h)

Apr 13: Welshpool Town (a)

May 4: Coedpoeth United (h)

TITLE HOPES: Currently top but have played more games than the other contenders. Home game against Berriew on March 9 will be crucial. All Henllan can do is aim to win their four remaining matches and hope that’s enough. They’ve been a breath of fresh air to the league whatever happens this season.

KEY PLAYERS INCLUDE: Magi Pierce, Beth Roberts, Lleucu Williams

Berriew

Gemma Jones – what a player

Feb 2: Coedpoeth United (a)

Feb 16: Denbigh Town (a)

Feb 23: Coedpoeth United (h)

Mar 9: Henllan (a)

Apr 13: Northop Hall (h)

May 4: Airbus (h)

TITLE HOPES: Perhaps the slight title favourites at present. Three very winnable games among their last six, but results versus Denbigh Town, Henllan and Airbus will be vital.

KEY PLAYERS INCLUDE: Gemma Jones, Hannah Richards, Samantha Jones

Airbus

Meet the Airbus dazzlers

Feb 16: Welshpool Town (a)

Mar 9: Denbigh Town (a)

Apr 13: Denbigh Town (h)

Apr 20: Northop Hall (h)

Apr 27: Coedpoeth United (a)

May 4: Berriew (a)

TITLE HOPES: Right in the mix with a good chance of three wins, while the two meetings with Denbigh will be key. Their match at Berriew on May 4 could end up the title decider. Airbus are a cracking young side who have bounced back really well from last season’s relegation from tier 2.

KEY PLAYERS INCLUDE: Ffion Jones, Laura Pratt, Catrin Ellis

Denbigh Town

Feb 16: Berriew (h)

Feb 23: Welshpool Town (a)

Mar 9: Airbus (h)

Mar 16: Coedpoeth United (a)

Apr 13: Airbus (a)

May 4: Northop Hall (a)

TITLE HOPES: Probably the outsiders of the four to win the title, but that could all change if they can beat Airbus twice. Denbigh’s home tussle with Berriew on February 16 could be a genuine six-pointer.

KEY PLAYERS INCLUDE: Amber Hellon, Abi Cooke, Netty Young
