Report: Steve Roberts (Holywell Town FC)
Ten years ago this week Holywell Town recorded an amazing 21st successive win since the start of the 2014-15 season at the expense of Llanrug United at Halkyn Road.
Town looked to do the double over the Caernarfon-area side in this pre-Christmas battle, having beaten them 5-0 at Eithin Duon earlier in the campaign.
Holywell took the lead with 3 minutes on the clock as Dafydd Griffith got up well to head home past Dylan Roberts from a Sam Jones corner.
Town continued their flying start and Phil Lloyd put Jones in on goal but his effort was saved well by Roberts.
With 20 minutes gone, the visitors had their first real chance. From a corner, the ball fell to Kevin Lloyd and his low cross across the face of goal was blocked by Matty Roberts with a couple of Llanrug players ready to pounce.
Soon after, David Noel Williams shot towards Mike Platt’s goal but his effort was blocked by Griffith and the ball fell kindly for Lloyd, whose powerful volley was saved well.
More pressure by Llanrug saw Lloyd get another shot in which was blocked by Jack D’arcy and the follow up by Cai Williams flew over the bar, much to the relief of the Wellmen.
On the half hour mark, Llanrug won a free kick in a dangerous position and Dylan Owen’s attempt was saved by Platt.
A couple of minutes later, Town doubled their lead. Paul Williams, who was having a great game down the left, cut through the Llanrug defence and fired the ball into the bottom corner.
A minute or so later, Williams once again broke into the box and after beating three defenders, coolly passed to Luke Tyson. who made it 3-0.
The first clear chance of the second half fell to Holywell. Great passing along the edge of the Llanrug penalty area saw the ball fall to Tony Roebuck, and his fierce shot came back out off the upright with Roberts beaten.
Llanrug responded when substitute Jonathon Peris Jones saw his header cleared off the line by Griffith.
The game was wrapped up just after an hour. Holywell broke clear from the halfway line through Paul Williams and he was running on towards goal with the defenders beaten.
Keeper Roberts came out to narrow the angle but Williams expertly picked out Tyson, who knocked in his second and Town’s fourth.
In the final 10 minutes, Llanrug scored a consolation goal through Cai Williams, whose strike through a crowded penalty area somehow found the back of the net.
The winning streak Holywell were on when they met Llanrug in December 2014 ran to 23 games and 23 victories before they were held 4-4 by Kinmel Bay.
By the end of 2014-15. Holywell Town had recorded a terrific treble, being crowned Welsh Alliance Division One champions with just one defeat in 26 games, lifting the FAW Trophy by beating Penrhyndeudraeth 4-2 in the final and scooping the Mawddach Cup with a 3-2 success over Llanrug,
However, Llanrug did gain the satisfaction of denying the Wellmen a quadruple when they pipped them 2-1 in the Cookson Cup final.
