All hail the 2024 North Wales Cricket League Premier Division champions – magnificent Mochdre!

Mochdre are North Wales Cricket League Premier Division champions for the first time in their history.

And seldom can there have ever been more deserving title-winners.

From virtually ball one back at the start of May, the Conwy County Borough village side have been right on the money.

That opening day 15-0 points thrashing away to Northop pretty much set the tone for a season to remember for Joe Chaplin’s men.

Today’s victory at Gwersyllt Park was Mochdre’s 13th in 16 starts. They have suffered just a single loss, with a cancellation and an abandonment also on their record.

With two rounds of matches remaining, Mochdre are now in an unassailable position in top spot.

Their success has been very much a team effort, but among individuals to stand out include the returning Adam Campion, a gifted batsman and bowler who has contributed 448 league runs and 18 wickets this season.

Wales NC all-rounder and former captain Matty Humphreys has chalked up 32 league victims and scored 419 runs, while overseas star Marcus Mangiameli has claimed 36 wickets and notched 265 runs.

Opening bat Alex Davies has been sensational, posting a career-best 166 in amassing 525 league runs in just 12 games and skipper Chaplin has been very consistent with bat and ball.

Today’s game at Gwersyllt saw Mochdre win the toss, decide to bat and slump to 16-3 and 66-5.

However, Campion was there holding things together and he went on to make 94, receiving fine support from Sam Davies (41) and James French (21), with whom the ex-Colwyn Bay star put on 65 for the sixth wicket.

Owen Davies added a late unbeaten 25 to guide the leaders to 242-8 off 50 overs, Daniel Jones taking 3-63 and Venumadhav Peram 2-20 off 10 for the hosts.

Lewis Cole also produced a really good opening spell of 1-17 from 10.

In reply, Gwersyllt were sent packing for 143, Daniel Jones best with 37, Mangiameli gathering 3-26 off 10, Owen Davies 3-30, Campion 2-30 and Humphreys 2-36. Wicket-keeper French took five catches.

The points went 14-1 to Mochdre and the celebrations of a magnificently consistent season began!
