Know of any clubs breaking the rules by paying players? If so – tell us, say football association

Anyone aware of tier 4 or 5 North Wales Coast clubs which pay players to play are being urged to inform the area association.

The North Wales Coast FA put out a statement today which emphasised it is strictly against the rules for teams in the pyramid’s two lower tiers to give out wages.

The payments ban covers – within the NWCFA – North Wales Coast East Premier and Division One, North Wales Coast West Premier and Division One, plus the Development Leagues.

Four years ago, the FAW classed Tiers 4 and 5 ‘recreational’ football and passed a rule stating no professional players are permitted at those levels.

The word ‘recreational’ caused plenty of controversy with many commenting the term suggests lower leagues operate on a ‘fun’ basis without the competitive edge of the higher pyramid.

Nonetheless, the word has remained, with the FAW adamant if it receives information that a player is breaching the rule about payment to players, then the national body would investigate and charge the club if appropriate.

Concerns were expressed four years ago over clubs going “underground” and paying players regardless.

A ban on giving an amateur player ‘wages’ would be difficult to police, it was also said.

Today, the NWCFA reiterated the warning that Tier 4 and 5 clubs are rule-breaking if they pay player wages.

A statement said: “Please be reminded that Tier 4 and Tier 5 are classified as recreational football. “Therefore, payments to players for participating in your teams are strictly prohibited.

“Any team in these tiers found making payments will be deemed to have fielded an ineligible player, resulting in a sanction of 3 points deducted per game per ineligible player along with a financial penalty.

“Let’s keep it recreational and fair for everyone. If you are aware of any violations and are concerned, please report the matter to the NWCFA.”

The discussion on which clubs are paying and who isn’t is never far away from the local football agenda on social media.

Some claim certain prohibited clubs have been rewarding players financially for years, however no known cases relating to North Wales tiers 4 and 5 have come before the FAW.

The rumour mill is always awash with local football followers accusing more successful clubs of paying players. but claiming it is one thing, proving it is another.

As a grassroots football writer, I hear many allegations that some clubs pay wages in the lower pyramid, but have never seen any proof.

Those with any concerns on this issue know there is an avenue to complain to and should use it.
