The surname Davies has long held very special significance for sports fans in the city of Bangor.

There was Dave Davies, the former boxing star who won the British ABA title and a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in 1970.

Then there is Les Davies, one of the city’s finest footballing talents who won three Welsh Cups and the Welsh Premier League title, as well as being nominated for the Best Player in Europe award in 2012.

While tonight’s match-winner against Mold Alexandra, Bangor 1876 attacker Dale Davies, has some way to go before matching the popularity of the aforementioned duo, he has certainly developed a good relationship with the club’s fans since joining in January.

Apart from scoring in his last two matches, Davies has impressed the 1876 supporters with his tremendous heart and work-rate, as well as his great character.

Davies’ 66th minute goal at Nantporth earned 1876 one of their best wins since joining the Cymru North at the expense of fourth-place Mold. Bangor are just one spot below in fifth.

Mold had the first shot on target in the 12th minute when Jake Roberts’ fierce strike was well saved by Carl Jones.

It was mainly all Alex as Jones denied Joe Ormrod before Roberts curled a shot narrowly wide and Henry Nash’s glancing header went close.

Joshua Watkin broke into box but stopper Jones used his feet to block the left back’s shot.

At the other end, Corrig McGonigle had Bangor’s first shot at goal on 41 but Alex Swindell was able to save comfortably.

Tom Clarke headed over before Craig Whelan’s shot was parried by Alex Swindell as Bangor finished the half the better.

Bangor changed shape for the second half with Sam Jones replacing Iolo Hughes.

In the 57th minute, Joe Culshaw swung a free-kick into the box and a glancing nod by McGonigle was turned round the post at full stretch by Swindell.

Bangor did have the ball in the net after 65 minutes when Clarke netted after Swindell pushed out a shot by Dion Jones, but the goal was disallowed due to offside.

Within a minute, it was 1-0. Swindell saved a header from McGonigle but Dale Davies slammed in the rebound with a powerful shot.

Mold rallied strongly and only the heroics of Carl Jones denied them an equaliser.
