Abergele have now recorded the joint-fourth highest number of wins in NWCFA Junior Cup history

Abergele with all the trophies they have won in 2022-23. They have now landed the NWCFA Junior Cup four times in their history

Abergele are now joint fourth highest on the list of clubs to win the NWCFA Junior Cup.

Their 4-0 victory over Llandudno Amateurs on May 13, 2023, made it four times that Gele have lifted the cup – joining Llanrwst and Connah’s Quay Albion on that number of wins.

Apart from their penalties success over Prestatyn Town Reserves in the 1999 showpiece, Abergele have always won their finals very convincingly.

In 1920 and 1924, they defeated Holywell Textiles and Llechid 6-0 respectively on each occasion. Then there was May 13, 2023’s four-goal triumph over Llandudno Amateurs, who were also beaten finalists in 1978.

The 2023 final at Nantporth Stadium, Bangor, was the 116th in the history of a competition which began in 1895-96 as a knockout for lower-tier/village teams.

Menai Bridge have lifted the cup the most times – eight – but their last success was in 1948.

In more recent times, the Junior Cup has catered for tier 5 teams competing in the North Wales Coast East and West Division One.

The biggest win in a final remains Glan Conwy’s 7-1 beating of Llannerchymedd Bulls in 1997-98.

Asa Thomas, the most prolific of marksmen in North Wales over the past decade or so, scored four times in the 2011 final for Trearddur Bay, but still ended up on the losing side with Point of Ayr winning 6-4.

Only two clubs have won the cup three times in a rowMostyn YMCA in 1972, 1973 and 1974, plus Llanberis in 1964, 1965 and 1966.

Sixteen finals since 1895-96 had to be settled after a replay, the last of which was Holyhead Town v Llandegfan in 1987-88. Four finals in history have been decided on a penalty shoot-out.

The 1905-06 final between Greenfield and Holyhead saw the cup shared for the only time after three draws.

The worldwide pandemic meant the 2019-20 Junior Cup was cancelled at the semi-final stage, while the 2020-21 competition was scrapped altogether for the same reason.
