All hail the North Wales Women’s League champions for 2022-23 – CPDM Bangor 1876.
This phenomenally consistent side, managed by Aron Griffith, Andrew ‘Lefty’ Wright and Lois Regan, made sure they cannot be caught at the top with a 1-0 win today over the only side which could have passed them – Pwllheli.
With 11 games left, the most points Pwll can get is 60. 1876 already have 61 with one game remaining – away to Pwllheli.
Bangor 1876 boosted their record this afternoon to 20 wins and a draw with a stunning 119 goals scored and a ridiculous just seven conceded.
A strong-looking Pwllheli side pushed them hard at Nantporth in an end-to-end match, but the home goalkeeper Becca Elliott was outstanding.
A first half goal from 17-year-old sensation Mia Roberts, her 14th in the league this season, was enough to settle the issue.
In the 31st minute, Lisa Thomas slid the ball through the defence to Roberts, who hit a shot with the outside of her right foot to the bottom corner.
Also in the first half, Menna Evans was through and struck a fierce half volley, but Hayley Rees-Williams in the Pwllheli goal produced an outstanding fingertip save onto the bar.
The second half was end-to-end but Pwllheli had a one-on-one from which Elliott concocted a magnificent double save.
With the machinations of the North Wales League, including the vast amount of games left to play and the doubt whether all teams will see out their fixtures, 1876 are probably best described as ‘unofficial’ champions for now, but as things stand they cannot be caught and are more than worthy title winners – a cut above the rest.
