We chose 12 female players to watch on the North Wales football scene at the start of the season.
How are they all getting on? Here’s a progress check…..
It has been a frustrating season for Amlwch from the point of view they have played far fewer games than many clubs in the North Wales Women’s League.
One of the positives has been the development of 18-year-old Ellie Jones whose high energy performances helps the team tick.
The former Bethel player has notched six goals this season, three sets of two.
Appearances: 11 Goals: 6
Most of the young midfielder’s 14 first team appearances have been as a substitute, but she has chalked up a couple of 90-minute outings as well.
Still only 17, Erin’s maturity as a player is coming along in leaps and bounds. Blessed with a great footballing brain, she plays the game simply and effectively.
Appearances: 14 Goals: 1
Has missed the last few games but overall she is having an outstanding season.
The former Wales U-17 and Stoke City prospect joined Wrexham last July and has netted 10 first team goals, plus 14 for the under-19’s.
We certainly picked a good one to focus on in the case of Miss Harley!
Last weekend, the 17-year-old dazzler scored the winning goal for Nomads in a tight game at Rhyl which ensured her team stays top of the Genero Adran North.
Elana has netted nine goals for the first team this season, as well as 13 for the under-19’s – 22 in all from 23 matches. Far from just a goalscorer, she has a mass of assists on her record too.
Last season, Elana helped Wrexham to the Under-19 Genero Adran North Development title and the national play-off final.
Formerly with Chester and NFA, she has also been selected for Wales training camps in the past. What a future she looks to have.
Games have been few and far between for defender Steph since she returned to Rhyl 1879 in October.
This is largely due to the fact fixtures have been scarce for the Lilywhites.
Steph played the full 90 in Rhyl’s fine performance in a 1-0 defeat to leaders Connah’s Quay last weekend, so hopefully this signals the start of a run of games and the opportunity to show more of the ability which made her a title winner last season.
One of the stars of Rhyl’s 2021-22 North Wales League title success, Loz has had to vie for the number 1 jersey with Bethan Thomas since October.
As ever, Loz has never let the Lilywhites down when the opportunities have come and she was on her best form in last weekend’s narrow 1-0 defeat to table-toppers Nomads.
As already mentioned in this article, lack of games has hampered some teams’ progress this season, including Amlwch, Rhyl 1879 and….Llanystumdwy.
When managing to play, Llan have performed pretty well and right at the heart of those good displays has been captain Hana Wellings.
Hana has played in nine games, scoring three goals – two against Pwllheli and one in a 3-0 success over Flint. She will remain one of the team’s key players.
Many of NFA’s recognised regulars have stood out in 2022-23, but one of their very best players this term is someone who joined the Rhyl-based club at the start of the season – Zoe Stopford.
In 13 appearances, Zoe has notched seven goals and picked up a number of Player of the Match awards.
No surprise to see her do so well. This 26-year-old has impressed for Rhyl and Holywell in the past.
Llangefni are surely the most improved team in the North Wales League this season and one major reason is the form of strike partnership Jen Cox and Ellie Coulson.
Cox has hit 19 goals and Coulson 9 – 28 in all.
Ellie is far from just a goalscorer, her height and skill makes her a perfect target-woman and up front link-player.
What a season Jenna is having for runaway North Wales League leaders Bangor 1876.
On joining the club last summer, she revealed she would take on a more attacking role compared to her past service as mainly a defender.
And she has certainly come good! Ten goals this season and playing some of the best football in a career which has brought her success with Caernarfon Town, Bethesda Athletic and Bethel.
Not featured for Felinheli since December.
This talented goalscoring midfielder, top markswoman for Bangor 1876 last season, has played in seven first team matches for Felin, her best moment being a two-goal haul in a 4-3 success over CPD Y Rhyl 1879 in October.
A regular in the Genero Adran North since joining Airbus from NFA this season.
Scored a hat-trick in a 3-2 Adran Trophy win against Felinheli in October.
Working hard to boost an Airbus side yet to win a league game this season despite some encouraging performances, especially at Rhyl in a 4-3 loss two weeks ago.
