Double Port please!
No, that’s not the latest order at the Cob and Pen we are talking about, it’s recognition of a tremendous achievement by Porthmadog Football Club.
News emerged today that Traeth duo Craig Papirnyk and Rhys Alun have been named JD Cymru Leagues Manager and Player of the Month respectively for September 2022.
It’s a magnificent honour for a club which only returned to the tier 2 Cymru North this season after winning the Ardal Northern promotion play-off back in May, beating Caersws 5-0 in the final at Barmouth.
Port’s main hero that day was hat-trick star Rhys Alun, a gifted attacker who has continued his fine form into 2022-23.
Manager “Paps” was re-appointed in December 2019, just seven months after leaving Porthmadog.
Last season saw him lead the club back to the Cymru North at the first attempt.
Holder of a UEFA “B” Licence, Paps first became Port manager in 2014/15 and had his best season in 2018/19 with the club finishing in third spot in the former Cymru Alliance.
He first joined Port as a player from his hometown club Barmouth and Dyffryn in August 2013, later becoming player-coach. His other former clubs include Ruthin Town and Bala Town.
Seven points from three games in September saw Port end the month in fourth and secured Paps a well-deserved award.
Rhys Alun Williams, 24, signed for Port in June 2019 from Nantlle Vale. He was scorer in 2021/22 with 23 goals, including that play-off final treble. Rhys was also named Supporters’ Player of the Season.
He can operate in a wide attacking role or as a central striker with a keen eye for goal. A skilful touch player who possesses excellent close control, he is an exciting and often spectacular performer.
In September, Rhys scored the winner for Port at Llandudno, that 1-0 result their best result of the campaign so far.
Ladies and Gentlemen…..Craig Papirnyk and Rhys Alun, a credit to their league and club.
