Half-centuries from Mathew Ryan and Northop’s Richard Walker enabled Wales NC North to set a winning total which ensured their excellent end to the season continued.
Put into bat at Penrhyn Avenue in this 50-over contest against Staffordshire, who they had lost to in three out of four previous meetings this summer, the hosts posted a decent score of 214-8.
Mathew Ryan and Jack Gower (22) started really well, putting on 82 for the first wicket.
Ryan went on to make the team’s highest score of 56, then Matty Humphreys of Mochdre continued his consistent form with 32.
Wales NC North dipped to 153-5 before Walker struck 53 off 51 balls prior to being run out in pursuit of late pickings.
Nils Priestley bowled well for Staffs, scooping 3-24 off 10 overs.
In reply, the visitors lost both openers to the bowling of Gresford’s Chris Ellwood with just 19 on the board.
Staffs slumped to 51-5 before their star player Priestley, who made 78, put on 91 for the sixth wicket with Freddie Doorbar (54 no).
A late flow of runs kept the away side in the hunt until they lost their last wicket on 202.
Ellwood took 3-35, Humphreys 3-50, Jason Foulkes 2-36 and there was a wicket apiece for Owen Reilly and Harrison Jones.
