Bodedern Athletic set a new North Wales record in the Welsh Cup!

Bodedern Athletic set a new record in the Welsh Cup at the weekend – the biggest ever win by a North Wales side in the competition.

Last season, Bala Town grabbed the accolade after walloping Brymbo 17-1 at Maes Tegid.

That was the highest Welsh Cup victory since Shrewsbury Town caned Mold Alyn Stars 21-0 back in 1894-95 – 127 years earlier.

Bodedern’s 17-0 bashing of Gaerwen on Saturday became a new North Wales record, but bizarrely it was not even the largest winning margin in the national knockout on the day!

That honour went to Cardiff Airport, who well and truly grounded Aberystwyth Exiles (and I’d stay clear of there after this score) 18-0.

However, it is 99.9% confirmed that no other North Wales team apart from Bodedern has ever won a Welsh Cup tie by as big a gap as 17-0.

Marc Evans (seven), Mohammed El-Arab (3), Chris Jones (2), Shaun Jenkins, Jordan Taylor, Ry Lees, Daniel Jones and Jenson Rowlands shared the goals for Ricky Williams’ tier 3 newcomers.

It is not the first time Boded have made the record books in recent times.

Last season they won 18 league matches in a row to become the first Welsh club to top the UK-wide Global League Stats table published by Non-League Matters website.

LET’S LOOK BACK….

Is it easier to run up a cricket score in the Welsh Cup these days with more bottom tier clubs entering?

Double-figure duffings have been fairly common in the competition’s history, although maybe teams who enter it are that bit more determined to avoid a pasting and raise their game….thus lowering the amount of biffings.

Take a look at some of these high-scoring Welsh Cup ties over the years.

1964-65
Overton St Mary’s 1-10 Caernarvon Town

Overton must have been saying a few Hail Mary’s in the hope the goals flying into their net would stop!

1960-61
Llay Welfare 14-1 Queen’s Park Rangers (Wrexham)

There were concerns for Rangers’ welfare after they shipped endless goals in this one-sided contest. They must have wished the real QPR would come along to save them.

1954-55
Bagillt United 0-14 Denbigh Town (at Denbigh)

Although Bagillt were drawn at home, the tie was played at Central Park where Denbigh went to town.
“We’d ‘ave ‘ad ’em at Bagillt,” one Bagillt fan did not say after the game.

1947-48
Rhyl 11-0 Caernarvon Town

This is quite a well-known tie, it could have marked Rhyl’s record Welsh Cup win.
It must have been a long, gloomy journey home for Caernarfon, and no doubt butties were in short supply at the Twthill that night.

1936/37
Kidderminster Harriers 15-2 Aberystwyth Town

Was Kim Casey playing for the Harriers?
Aberystwyth have dished out some double-figure drubbings in the Welsh Cup over the years, but they were very much the victims on this day.

1934-35
Llanerch Celts 11-0 Crosville

Pretty sure the bus didn’t wait for Crosville’s players after this game and they all had to walk home after having their tickets firmly clipped.

1930-31
Ewloe Celtic 14-1 Llysfaen

Sadly Emlyn Robert Jones’ current Llysfaen side lost 11-0 in the Welsh Cup on Saturday, but he might not feel so bad after discovering the village’s 1930-31 hopefuls were licked hollow by bad boys Ewloe.

1894/95
Mold Alyn Stars 0-21 Shrewsbury Town

Still a Welsh Cup record win! The Stars lost their shine on this day. Was it pitch black from the start and Shrewsbury’s players were the only ones with miners helmets? Were Mold seeing stars long before the end? Are you all wishing these awful cracks would dry up?

1889/90
Colwyn Bay 15-0 St Asaph Wanderers

Looks like the Bay held the Welsh Cup record win for a North Wales side until Bala ran riot against Brymbo last season.
Saints never had a prayer.
