Magic Meinir leads her country at hockey

Meinir Thomas captained the Wales Over-55 team today

Ynys Môn evergreen Meinir Thomas enjoyed one of the greatest days of her sporting career this weekend.

The super-fit Llangefni woman was chosen as one of the captains for the Wales Over-55 hockey team.

Not only that, she led the Welsh to victory over Bedford by two goals to nil.

“To be captain of your country is the greatest honour,” said Meinir. “I feel so chuffed and proud. We played so well and won 2-0. Sooooo happy!”

Meinir has been a hockey international for some years. She turns out for Bangor Ladies and has played for Wales Over-50s in the Masters’ World Cup, European Championship and Home Nations.

She is also a well-known footballer in North Wales.

The 2019-20 season saw Meinir conjure up seven goals for an Amlwch Town side which won the North Wales Women’s League Division Two championship.

The season before, Meinir was also involved in Amlwch landing their first major trophy – the Division Two Supplementary Cup.

Raised in Bodffordd, mum-of-three Meinir did not begin playing football until the mature age of 48.

She started working at Amlwch Primary School and Town captain, Carol Lewis, urged Meinir to attend training. She did and has never looked back.

As well as playing club football at Lon Bach, she has also represented Ynys Môn in two Island Games.
