Raise your glasses to Abergele FC – the 2021-22 North Wales Coast East League Division One champions!
Nick Holland, James Hay and Luke Binns’ side clinched the title today with an 8-0 thumping of Henllan at Dinorben Field.
Llanelwy Athletic’s shock 2-1 home loss against Rhos United meant Gele cannot be caught in top spot.
Abergele’s final match will be at Llanelwy, who need a point in that fixture to seal runners-up.
Today’s result means Gele have gone on a magnificent 25-game run without losing since being beaten for the only time in the league this season at Cerrigydrudion last July.
Abergele are unbeaten at home all season, scoring a total of 69 goals and only conceding 11.
Knowing what was potentially at stake today, Gele got off to a flyer with first half goals from Chris Davies, Dom Holland, James Lloyd and Anthony Zoezee.
The addition of Zack Laurence and Paul Jaycock at half time enabled Gele to continue where they left off.
Sam Ashton grabbed a goal, Holland got his second and Zoezee bagged two more to complete a well earned hat-trick.
James (Jimbo) Hay, a member of the management team who has been mainly involved in coaching of late due to injury, said: “These lads deserve it. They’re a great bunch of young lads.
“I came there last year towards the end of the season to try to embed a winning mentality. They’ve been magnificent and I’m made up for them.”
Due to the machinations of the Cymru Football App, Gele were at first not aware they had won the title as Llanelwy’s score was down as a 1-0 victory to them.
Had that been the case, Gele would still have required a draw at Llanelwy to be crowned champions. A win for Athletic and the title would have been theirs.
However, when the app was later updated, it emerged Rhos had won 2-1 so Abergele were champions with a game to spare!
