Another club resigns from the North East Wales League with just weeks of season left

A third club has withdrawn from the North East Wales Football League Championship Division with just weeks of the season remaining.

Brymbo Lodge have resigned, soon after the departure of Railway Rovers. AFC Bagillt stepped down in October 2021.

The tier 5 Championship started the 2021-22 season with 12 clubs but will finish it with nine – provided there are no more departures between now and the end of the campaign.

Both Railway Rovers and Brymbo Lodge cited lack of players and commitment as the reasons for their demise. The results of both teams this season will all be expunged.

Wrexham-based Railway’s first-ever game back in July resulted in a 17-0 victory over Bellevue, Jordan Valentine scoring 12 goals. They followed up by beating Brymbo Lodge 7-2 soon after, but were unable to keep up the momentum.

These are the nine remaining clubs in the Championship:

Borras Park Albion
CPD Bellevue
CPD Caerwys
CPD Sychdyn
Connah’s Quay Town
FC United of Wrexham
Johnstown YFC
Penyffordd Lions
Ruabon Rovers

Caerwys FC secretary Steve Griffith recently voiced his concern about the lack of lower-tier clubs in Flintshire.

After a match between Caerwys and Sychdyn, he said: “An interesting fact is that a few years ago, both teams would have faced other sides from Flintshire at this level but with no other teams apart from Connah’s Quay Town competing from the county in the Championship Division, it is worrying the lack of clubs from the highly populated areas of Deeside, Mold and Flint with no teams these days in villages like Brynford, Mostyn, Point of Ayr, Bagiilt and Northop/Northop Hall.

“It is fair to say that since the FAW changed the boundaries of the North Wales Coast FA 10 years ago that Flintshire has indeed suffered at lower levels of the football pyramid which must be a concern for the future of the game?”
