FAW AMATEUR TROPHY SEMI-FINAL

Mold Alexandra will take on Baglan Dragons in the 2021-22 FAW Amateur Trophy final.

Michael Cunningham’s Ardal North West side reached the competition’s showpiece game with a convincing win in Newtown today against tier 5 competition surprise package Rockspur.

The first half-hour was by no means comfortable for the Flintshire men with the Swansea Senior League Division One outfit creating some decent chances they would live to regret not taking.

Then came the breakthrough. Against the run of play in the 31st minute, Joey Ormrod fired the Alex ahead from a very wide angle.

Mold were now on top and threatened a second, but two minutes before the break Matt Hughes missed a sitter for Rockspur.

At the other end, Dom Doherty played in top-scorer Darren Warren, whose effort hit the leg of keeper Nick Lewis and looped just over the bar.

Half-time: 0-1

The South Walians, conquerors of holding Cefn Albion in the last round, again started the second half well, but on 54 minutes Alex grabbed a decisive second.

Warren intercepted a loose pass, drove at the defence and netted from wide out.

Four minutes later, Warren struck again, volleying in at the back post for his 37th goal in all competitions this season.

Two-goal hero Danny Warren

Only a flying save from Lewis denied Ormrod his second of the tie on the hour.

Warren and Ormrod went close with further attempts for Mold, while Alex keeper Elliot Quinlan produced a couple of good late saves as Rockspur kept trying to open their account.

In the end a great result for Mold and a place in the FAW Trophy final.

Elliot Quinlan, Matty Lewis, Steve Watkins, Ryan Coney, Dom Doherty, Danny Warren (Jimmy Ellina 86), Joe Ormrod (Phil Lloyd 77), Alex Smith, Ellis Hickey (Henry Carver 65), Rhyss Nash, Dafydd Griffith.
