JD Welsh Cup round three reports – Saturday, September 26

Buckley Town 2 (Hamilton 58, Roberts 83)
Monmouth Town 0

Second half goals from Asa Hamilton and Jake Roberts sent Cymru North Buckley through to the last 16.

Taking on tier 3 Ardal South East opposition in Monmouth, the home side were given a good test.

The tie turned in the Trotters’ favour after Amin Ahmed came on for Ruben Teixeira 10 minutes into the second half.

In the 58th minute. Ahmed’s pass opened up the Monmouth defence and two passes later Hamilton headed in.

Buckley’s second goal came from Roberts’ persistence which enabled him to finish in style.

Monmouth’s Rob Atkinson was a real thorn and a threat to the Bucks defence. Dylan Roberts and Josh Allen were outstanding for the hosts.

Penrhiwceiber Rangers 1 (Morgan 52)
Flint Town United 3 (Jones 45, Cadwallader 59, Kenny 75)

Flint surmounted a magnificent display from home keeper Dan Field to advance safely to the fourth round.

The tier 3 Ardal South West hosts could feel proud after giving the Cymru Premier visitors a great battle.

A combination of Field’s brilliance and some poor finishing by the Silkmen looked to have ensured a stalemate at half time.

However, in added on time, a Sam Hart corner was powerfully headed home by Alex Jones.

Earlier in the half, Jack Kenny’s strike was cleared off the line by Brandon Hill.

Field thwarted Ben Maher twice, also denied Kenny, then kept out a Michael Wilde header. Wilde had another attempt scrambled off the line.

The breakthrough on the stroke of half time looked to have calmed any fears of a cup upset, but Penrhiwceiber had other ideas and upped the ante at the start of the second period.

In the 52nd minute, a cross was delivered from the right, and Luke Morgan glanced the ball past Jon Rushton into the back of the net, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Ceiber now had their tails well and truly up, and Flint had to endure a rocky few minutes

However, on the hour, a long Jake Phillips throw was initially met by Wilde, before Jones headed it towards the far post, where Mark Cadwallader slid in to put the Silkmen 2-1 up.

Ceiber now had to commit more bodies forward, and it was always likely they might get caught on the break.

Sure enough, in the 75th minute Maher picked out Kenny with a great long pass, and he ran clear of the last defender before coolly slotting past Field.

Aberystwyth Town 4 (O Jones 18, M Jones 30 pen, 45+3 & 87 pen)
Cefn Druids 1 (Ben Wynne 80)

Managerless Druids went out of the cup at Park Avenue.

Two goals from Mathew Jones, one a penalty, plus an earlier Owain Jones strike gave Aber a 3-0 half time lead.

Ben Wynne pulled one back for the Ancients with 10 minutes left, but Mathew Jones ensured there would be no miracle recovery by completing his hat-trick for the hosts from the spot.

Airbus UK Broughton 1 (Davies 5)
Haverfordwest County 2 (Lewis 45+3, Sisay 88)

Cymru North leaders Airbus took an early lead through the prolific Adam Davies, but Kieran Lewis levelled in first half added time and Touray Sisay won it for the Cymru Premier visitors two minutes from the end.

Bala Town 5 (Venables 16 pen, Knott OG 23, Bauress 26, Leslie 56, Rutherford 73)
Pontypridd Town 0

Straight forward progress for the 2016-17 Welsh Cup winners.

There was to be no upset at Maes Tegid as Chris Venables’ penalty, a Jordan Knott own goal plus a Bradley Bauress net-finder made it 3-0 for the Cymru Premier hosts at half time.

Former Wrexham pair Steven Leslie and Paul Rutherford added further goals in the second half for Colin Caton’s side.

Saltney Town 1 (McCleary 90)
Penrhyncoch 1 (Gittins 21)
(Saltney won 4-3 on pens)

Saltney are the only tier 3 team left in the Welsh Cup after they knocked out Cymru North visitors Penrhyncoch on penalties.

Steffan Gittins handed the Roosters a 21st minute lead and it was not until the 90 had been reached that the Bordermen equalised with a Ryan McCleary free kick.

Spot-kicks were now needed and the underdogs prevailed 4-3.

This game is reported on in more detail elsewhere on Grassroots North Wales.

Swansea University 1 (Cam Langan 4)
Bangor City 0

City failed to triumph in their university challenge as the South Wales hosts proved quickest on the buzzer.

Swansea University landed an early starter for ten when Cam Langan struck in just the fourth minute.

There was to be no way back for the long-distance visitors.

Trefelin BGC 0
Connah’s Quay Nomads 4 (Insall 18 & 71, Mendes 53, Poole 66)

The live televised tie of the fourth round saw the Cymru Premier champions prove too strong for the Cymru South underdogs.

Jamie Insall scored twice for the visitors to make it five cup goals in as many days, while Paulo Mendes and Declan Poole also found the net for Andy Morrison’s men.
