Saltney Town prepare for the biggest match in their history

Saltney Town will have three key players missing for tomorrow’s Welsh Cup third round tie at home to Penrhyncoch, but there is also good news with the return of a quality goal-getter.

Bordermen manager Andy Dutton has to do without the experience of Lee Butterworth, and important players Corey Mason and Jake Johnson, but there is the bonus of Addie Callaghan coming back from a six-week injury sustained at Brymbo in early August.

Callaghan had netted five goals in as many games before his unfortunate lay-off.

Tomorrow’s last 32 clash sees Saltney carry the banner of being the only tier 3 side from North Wales left in the competition.

They earned their place in round three with a superb 5-3 away win at Cymru North outfit Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant. Only three other third tier teams – all from the south – remain in the competition.

The FAW’s controversial seeding system went a long way to ensuring the third round comprises mainly of tier 1 and 2 clubs.

Saltney Town are having a fine season, having gone unbeaten in their last 10 matches and riding high in Ardal North West.

Club chairman Darren Meredith said: “The lads have worked hard in both training sessions this week, and are looking sharp for a tough but exciting game.”

Penrhyncoch are a very dangerous side on their day, but sometimes lack consistency.

Saltney will be hoping the Roosters are still suffering a hangover from Wednesday’s 3-1 home defeat to Pontypridd Town in the Nathaniel MG Cup.

Saturday’s tie at Sandy Lane is being billed by Saltney as the biggest game in their history. Stature-wise, that is certainly the case. The game kicks off at 2.30 pm with admission £3 for adults.
