Nefyn United are expelled from Welsh Cup

Nefyn United have been thrown out of the Welsh Cup following a break of competition rules, the FAW report.

The Penwaig brought on four substitutes in their 3-1 win at Mountain Rangers last Saturday, but the competition only permits three.

Following the first qualifying round clash at Rhosgadfan, Rangers put in a protest after the fixture which has been upheld.

The FAW National Cup Board met remotely on Thursday to consider alleged breaches of JD Welsh Cup rules in seven matches played in Qualifying Round 1 last weekend.

In a later statement, the FAW said: “Following an official protest from opponents Mountain Rangers FC and in accordance with JD Welsh Cup Rule 20a, the National Cup Board removed Nefyn United from the competition for a breach of Competition Rule 19b.

“Mountain Rangers were deemed to have won the tie and will face Porthmadog away in Qualifying Round 2.”

Rule 19b states: A club may at its discretion use three substitute players at any time in a cup tie, except to replace a player who has been sent-off from the game by the referee after play has commenced. All substitute players must be nominated to the referee on the official team sheet.

Llanrug United were also cited for breaching FAW Rule 62 and JD Welsh Cup Rule 19i, but as they lost their Qualifying Round 1 tie, there was no decision required from the National Cup Board.

As well as Nefyn United, three South Wales clubs were expelled from the Welsh Cup for alleged rule flouting, namely Wattsville, Treforest and FC Cwmaman.

Dafen Welfare and Ton & Gelli BGC were also accused of transgressing FAW Rule 62 and JD Welsh Cup Rule 19i, but like Llanrug, as these clubs lost their Qualifying Round 1 ties, there was no decision required by the NCB.
