North Wales stars Laura Pennington and Kelsey Davies lifted some prestigious silverware on Sunday as part of the Wem Town team which won the Shropshire Women’s County Cup Final.
Former Northop Hall goal machine Pennington opened the scoring as Wem thrashed Shrewsbury Town at the New Bucks Head stadium in Wellington.
The ground is the home of National League North club AFC Telford United.
Having whipped Shifnal Town Ladies 5-1 in the semi-final the previous weekend, the newly-named and relocated Wem Town, formerly The New Saints, went into Sunday’s showpiece on a real high.
Pennington broke the deadlock in the 14th minute directly from a free kick to give Wem the perfect boost.
Lia Lewis narrowly shot over before clearing off her own line to prevent a Shrewsbury goal prior to the break.
Into the second half, where a major hero emerged for Wem in striker Katie Doster.
Four minutes in, Doster shot over before Pennington missed a gaping goal.
The next goal was vital and it came for Wem in spectacular fashion when Doster made it 2-0 with a stupendous overhead volley.
Midway through the half, Doster let the ball drop over her left shoulder and drilled a lovely shot into the bottom right-hand corner for 3-0.
In the 74th minute, Laura Morris took a corner, sub Emily Ridge crossed and Francesca Waltho applied the finish to make it four.
Twelve minutes from time, former Llandudno, Kinmel Bay and Wales winger Kelsey Davies came on as a substitute.
And five minutes before the end came the icing on the cake as Doster completed her hat-trick to secure the cup.
