Flashback – 5 years ago: Denbigh end great season in style

Gareth Thomas had an amazing 2015-16 season in charge of Denbigh

Conwy Borough 1 (Taylor)
Denbigh Town 3 (Bull 3)
Cymru Alliance – April 16, 2016

In the final match of a first season under Gareth ‘Perry’ Thomas which had seen them create history by reaching the Nathaniel MG Cup Final, Denbigh ran out 3-1 winners in the league at Y Morfa.

Town rounded off the campaign with an eight-match unbeaten run which secured a best-ever third-place finish in the second-tier Cymru Alliance.

Manager Thomas made a couple of changes with Mike Sharples missing and Kristian Pierce only fit for the bench.

The game started with Conwy moving the ball well whilst Denbigh seemed to struggle with the bounce on a difficult playing surface.

The home side had several decent build-ups without troubling the visiting keeper early on.

The first chance for Denbigh arrived when Paul Hart got behind the defence and saw his shot hit the post,

Two minutes later and Town went ahead when Liam Smith played the ball into the feet of Alan Bull, who turned his man and fired home.

Denbigh started to control the game and Sam Tate had a header superbly saved by John Burns from close range.

As half time approached Conwy levelled when Derek Taylor struck with a superb effort from 20 yards.

Half-time: 1-1

Hat-trick hero Alan Bull

The second half saw Sam Jones introduced for Tate and Town went on to register another three points.

On 68 minutes Bull so nearly made it 2-1 when he hit the post.

The introduction of leading scorer Pierce on 70 minutes saw Denbigh up the tempo and after 72 Bull, a former Welsh Premier League title winner with Bangor City, bagged his second to edge the visitors ahead.

The scoring was completed on 88 minutes when Sam Lewis played in a superb ball for Bull to complete his hat-trick and round off a superb season for the club under the guidance of manager Thomas.

Many thanks to Steve Reds for the match report
