Denbigh Town 1 (Bull 90)
Holywell Town 1 (P Williams pen 21)
Cymru Alliance League – March 19, 2016
A late goal from Denbigh’s Alan Bull denied Holywell all three points from their trip to Central Park five years ago today.
Just past the quarter-hour, Denbigh’s Sam Tate hit a great shot which clipped the stanchion supporting the goalposts before Warren Duckett had an effort fly over Mike Platt’s crossbar.
A few minutes later, Holywell took the lead. A great ball over the defence for Connor Littler saw him control and try to get past Duckett inside the area.
The ball hit Duckett’s arm and the referee blew and pointed to the penalty spot.
Paul Williams stepped up to take the spot kick and his low shot to the left beat Elliott Power in Denbigh’s goal.
The visitors went looking for a second and a good run by Brady McGilloway saw him beat three defenders but his shot was blocked.
Ross Ankers had a couple of free kicks in dangerous positions blocked and Phil Lloyd went close after a good run by Steve Thomas, but as the referee blew for half time, it remained 1-0.
Half time: Denbigh 0 Holywell 1
The second half saw Denbigh dominate possession.
When Holywell attacked, the home side defended well.
Denbigh piled on the pressure and a Steve Thomas clearance was needed after a dangerous delivery into the box, with Bull waiting to pounce on the ball which would have resulted in a goal.
Bull was in the thick of the penalty box action again, but Dafydd Griffith prevented him getting in a shot on target.
Platt had to punch the ball clear to thwart another Denbigh attack.
Disaster struck for the Wellmen on the stroke of full time as Denbigh equalised.
Platt did well to tip a shot onto the crossbar, but the ball came out and fell to a Denbigh player who whipped it back into the penalty area and Bull was able to tap home.
Holywell almost snatched it when Griffith flicked the ball on and Tony Roebuck volleyed goalwards but Power made a great one-handed save.
The resulting corner was cleared by Denbigh and that was the final action.
