Female Football Fun (and some serious) Awards 2020

NFA’s Jess Mills was a real shining star in 2020

Services to Football

Hannah Gwenllian Jones – stepped down as Bala Town media officer in July after many years tremendous service. Simply the best.

Funniest on Facebook

Leah Davies-Williams – appeared on Facebook with a facepack and flower on Christmas Day, that clinched it for me. Always a cheeky face and lots of funny quotes.

Funniest on Twitter

Lucy, dad. Emily and Charlotte

The Morris Triplets (Charlotte, Emily and Lucy ex-Denbigh Town) – another great year of football and TV show reviewing (sometimes with choice language) on Twitter. They did more to publicise Corrie than Geoff.

Fantasy figure at a women’s match in North Wales

Greta Thunberg – we’d love to see you at a game.

NHS Angel Award

Jess Roberts (Pwllheli). Thank you for everything. Best of luck after the op xx

Most Missed 1

Del Morgan – much missed on the playing front but does great work coaching keepers now. Ex-Wales international left Cefn Druids in May to join Connah’s Quay.

Best Lockdown Video

Amlwch Ladies celebrate (scene not from the video)

Amlwch Town Ladies

Most Welcome Comeback

Mari Edwards (left – blue). Pic: Matt Jones

Mari Edwards (Airbus) – returned in a friendly match after two years out with injury. Still a major part of the management set-up at Airbus.

Best Pet Person

Charlotte Xena Rose – has made great progress with her initially timid black cat. She adores animals and she is also much adored!

Most Missed 2

Sara Furlong – entered the final furlong with Amlwch Town in 2019-20, winning the Division Two title, but was unavailable this season. Will always be welcome back, great defender.

Most Popular New Addition

Holywell FC Girls and Ladies. Results didn’t matter – their inclusion meant everything. Some really good players and good times ahead. They are developing some great youngsters too.

Best Media Mate

Caitlin Hadaway – nothing is ever too much trouble for this diamond, has been an amazing help in my work. And now she plans a career in the army. Everyone loves Caits and wishes her the best.

Best North Wales Girl in English football

Laura Pennington (right) in her Northop Hall days with team-mate Chelsea Evans

Laura Pennington – Penno has made round two of the Women’s FA Cup with Wem Town, who will face mighty Stoke City in January! Everyone loves Penno – it’s clear as that. Goals, goals and more goals.

Best Recreational Footballer

Maddie Williams (Llanfairfechan Town) – great not just as a goalscorer but as a promoter of women’s recreational football and her beloved Llanfairfechan.

Best Upset (Welsh Cup excluded)

Tegan Hewitt. Photo: Matt Jones

Airbus 4 Bethel 0 – this was a massive Betty Pickering Cup win for Airbus against a Bethel side which reached the Welsh Cup quarter-finals and finished runners-up in Division One. Katelyn Tilston 2 and Tegan Hewitt 2 with the goals.

Best Game

NFA 3 Llanberis 2 – loved this contest. Amy Chesters and Emily Jones put NFA two-up, Ffion Mair Roberts and a stunning Charley Davies free kick made it 2-2, then Emily scored the winner. Game played in great spirit.

Best Snacks Chat

Bridget Madigan (Llanfairfechan Town)

Best Welcome

NFA and Llanberis in the game mentioned above. Made my day, everyone was so happy and friendly.

Best First Year Senior Player

Jessica Mills (NFA) – such a young player but really mature in the way she plays the game. Her runs as wing back make her a real stand-out performer. Love the family too.

Celebrity Turn Up

Tash (fourth left – back row)

Tash Matthews (at Llanystumdwy) – what a joy to see one of the finest defenders in North Wales helping out new team Llanystumdwy.

Heron Foods Loyalty Award

Sara (light blue)

Sara Lacey

Best New Appointment

Lefty (right) with Pwllheli coach Erica Jones

Andrew ‘Lefty’ Wright (Pwllheli) – brilliant to see one of the most popular and respected figures in women’s football back involved. Pwllheli’s gain for certain.

Best New Arrivals

Sadly no photos, won’t take any without permission…

Jessica (to Tash Matthews and Sion Parry in July), Henri (to Gwenno and Ben Bolton in July) and Bertie (to Sadie and Mathew Richards in December). Any other women football births I’ve forgotten a thousand apologies – I can add them in!
