Flashback: Greatest day in CPD Mynydd Llandegai’s history

Surely the greatest achievement in the history of CPD Mynydd Llandegai.

Ten years ago the village football team lifted the North Wales Coast Junior Cup following a thrilling penalty shoot-out victory over Bangor City Reserves.

Cheered on by a massive travelling support, Glyn Morris’ side celebrated the biggest success in their short existence at Porthmadog’s Y Traeth ground.

Included in the Llandegai starting line up was top scorer Paul de Waart, who had been out of action for two months following an ear operation.

And de Waart could not have made a more dynamic comeback as he netted twice in the opening five minutes to reach 30 goals for the season.

The opening whistle had barely sounded when de Waart left his marker standing and raced on to fire into the bottom corner.

And on five minutes Mynydd were in dreamland when Ian Owen’s shot was kept out by City keeper Kyle Williams but de Waart was on hand to knock in the rebound.

Shell-shocked Bangor, who were chasing a quadruple, gradually settled and pulled a goal back on 31 minutes through Steven Jones.

In the second half City pressed but it was not until the 80th minute that Daniel Bulayima levelled with a cracking header from a Jones corner.

Bangor could have won it late on had Llandegai keeper Dafydd Harri Morris not produced a fantastic save from a Jones strike.

Extra time brought no further goals so it went down to penalties where the thrills continued.

Williams saved Llandegai’s second kick from Huw Davies and Dylan Roberts stepped up for a chance to win the cup for City but was denied by Morris.

It was now down to sudden death and Mark Sullivan converted for Llandegai, leaving Morris to save again from Jack Williams and clinch the cup for the villagers.

“We are over the moon,” said a jubilant Llandegai boss Morris afterwards.

“We’d like to say a special thank you for all the support we had. So many people travelled from Llandegai to cheer us on and help us to victory.”

Morris added winning the cup was ample consolation for Llandegai losing out to Bangor in the race for the Caernarfon and District League Division One title.
