Flashback: NWCFA Challenge Cup Final – Flint Town United v Prestatyn Town (2006-07)

Next season the North Wales Coast FA Challenge Cup competition is due to return after a six-year absence.

Grassroots North Wales is running a mini-series recollecting past finals.

In our seventh instalment, we recall a good night for Flint Town United against a fast-rising Prestatyn Town.

NWCFA Amicus Challenge Cup Final – May 2007

A goal by Jay Forlan four minutes into the second half was enough for Flint Town United to get their hands back on the Challenge Cup.

Flint’s victory in a competitive final at a rain-swept Colwyn Bay was their first in the competition’s showpiece for 17 years.

Looking for their first success in this top domestic tournament, battling Prestatyn were always in the hunt.

But despite having beaten the Rhyl’s Welsh Premier League side 2-0 in the quarter-finals, they could not get the better of their fellow Cymru Alliance opponents on the night.

Starting strongly, Prestatyn player-manager Neil Gibson was only an inch too high with a rising drive on eight minutes.

At the other end, Flint were thwarted by two outstanding saves from Jon Hill-Dunt, before John Davies scooped the ball off the Silkmen’s goal-line with keeper Andy Hughes stranded just before the break.

Half-time: 0-0

The only goal of the game arrived on 49 minutes when opportunist Forlan rolled a rebound past three Prestatyn defenders and into the net from 22 yards out to the surprise of just about everyone.

Prestatyn again suffered a misfortune when Ian Griffiths thudded against the post with 10 minutes to go.

The Seasiders’ only consolation on the night was the award of man-of-the-match to their central defender Jamie Duffy.
