Ex-Welsh Premier and Wales Schools prospect joins Llanrwst United

One of the North Wales football stories which somewhat passed under the radar last season was the outstanding form of Llanrwst United.

The Conwy Valley side finished a brilliant third in Welsh Alliance Division One, their finest result a 5-1 home thrashing of eventual champions Holyhead Hotspur.

The Rwsters overcame the January departure of joint top scorer in the first division, Callum Parry, to end up just a point off runners-up spot under the PPG system, brought into play through the early end to the season due to COVID-19.

Next season will see manager Leighton Griffiths joined by former boss Barry Owen in running the team.

Llanrwst have already been boosted by attaining Tier 3 certification and now wait for the FAW’s July 10 decision on what league they will play in during 2020-21.

More good news for the Parc Gwydir club is the capture of former Llandudno FC and Wales Schools international Owain Jones.

They have also managed to re-sign Elliot Llewellyn after he took a year out.

United have kept all players from last season apart from Leon Doran, who signed for Holyhead Hotspur last week, and Sam Roberts has also departed to join Bangor 1876.

Manager Leighton Griffiths said: “I’m really happy to have Elliot back as he plays a big part in the team and gives us a massive boost in the middle of the field.

“I’m really happy with our new signing Owain Jones, who brings youth, pace and excitement to the attacking options for Llanrwst.

“Also delighted to have Benn Lundstram committed as well as he is a young promising talent we want to keep for as long as possible.

“A number of clubs were after the Jones brothers (Sam & Tom), but I’m pleased they have chosen to stay and committed to the new season as they have both fitted in really well to the squad.”

Award-winning players also remaining at Llanrwst include experienced left-back Matt Mullender (two times Manager’s Player) who has re-committed after being offered a move.

Young and talented Sam Thomas (Committee’s Player) is staying put as well as the youthful Harri Wyn Roberts, who has made a promising start to his senior career.
