Remembering Sean Brett (1972-2022) – when Sean chose his All-Time North Wales XI

Back in November 2020, we published the third feature in a series where we asked local football managers to pick their All-Time North Wales XI.

Players could be from any era. Managers could choose players they worshiped as a kid, played alongside, played against, managed or managed against.

This day’s selections were from Sean Brett.

Then in charge of Glantraeth FC, Sean began managing in Sunday league before nine seasons at the helm with Menai Bridge, which proved rewarding both trophy wise and in developing young talent.

He joined the management team at Gaerwen before taking on the Glantraeth role in 2020.

Sean Brett’s All Time North Wales XI

1 Lee Moore

Best keeper I’ve managed in his prime. Brilliant shot stopper, great organiser and huge presence. Once saved 2 penalties in a minute to effectively win us a league tithe.

2 Tom Parry

Most underrated player I know, so versatile he can and has played everywhere. Should be playing at a much higher level.

3 Sion Hogan

Again a versatile player who played up front brilliantly in Menai Bridge’s title win last season but had a year for me at left-back where he was unplayable.

4 Tom Taylor

Best player to play against my sides by a mile. Unbelievable footballer anywhere up the middle and single-handedly won a league title against us. Won Inter-Island Games with Ynys Mon last year, played Cymru Alliance with Caernarfon Town and Porthmadog.

5 Matty Lock

Outstanding footballer who can play centre-back or holding midfielder and has everything. Used to play for Conwy and Glantraeth and now with Bangor 1876.

6 Sam Faulkner

Saw Sam go from a prolific goal scoring junior to a centre-midfielder who I gave a senior debut to at 16. Ferocious in the tackle and great player, biggest compliment I can give him is he’s the only player I saw get the better of Tom Taylor in a Junior Cup semi final.

7 Dylan Roberts

Again comfortable at centre-back or centre-mid and one of the most naturally gifted players I’ve seen. Got the hardest shot I’ve seen and once scored a ridiculous back heel volley!

8 Darren Gowans

Unreal player with a wand of a left foot and a tireless runner with ball, top player. Won major trophies with Bethesda Athletic and Caernarfon Town, has played for numerous clubs.

9 Asa Thomas

What a goal scorer. Prolific at every level he’s played and broke my heart numerous times. Scored 500 career goals before the age of 30.

10 Lance Williams

“One Chance” Lance Williams with the Bob Brodie Trophy he won for scoring 62 goals for Menai Bridge Tigers in 2012-13

Amazing player and had everything. Pace (in his younger years!). Strong, a deadly finisher and prolific net-finder who played a huge part in the successes we had at Menai Bridge.

11 Danny Brookwell

Simply the best player I’ve managed. Another player I gave a senior debut to and an unreal talent, glides across the pitch with the ball and unplayable when he’s at it.

Honorary subs bench

Sam Jones
Coached Sam from age of 5 and seen him develop brilliantly at Menai Bridge. Was a prolific striker and most skillful player I know and really proud to see him now at Caernarfon in the Welsh Premier.

Dean Redmond
Only managed Dean last year where he was key in our title win at Menai Bridge. The hardest working player I’ve managed and a nightmare to play against.

Tom Innes
One of the most naturally talented players I know and someone I love watching. The only junior player that played against my junior team I wished played for me. Did manage him briefly for Anglesey though. Blighted by injury since he was 16 and I really hope to see him and hopefully manage him on a pitch again.
