In-form Bethel handed impressive new side Nomads their first defeat in this NEWFA Women’s Cup clash.

The Quay, of North Wales League Division Two, had thrashed Denbigh Town of Division One 8-3 away in the Welsh Cup last weekend, but there was to be no repeat against the higher level Bethel.

The match took place at Ysgol Brynrefail, Llanrug, as Felinheli’s Cae Seilo pitch was unplayable due to being frozen.

Bethel made several changes from last week’s Welsh Cup win over Rhyl.

Llio Henshaw, Shannon Jones and Jenna Allsup all started on the bench, while Ffion Williams and Katie Midwinter were unavailable.

Erin Allen Jones, Hannah Jones, Angharad Evans and Katie Houghton came into the starting line up.

The first half was very much a dull affair, with neither side taking control of the match.

Connah’s Quay took the lead when Candice Nellist was sent through on goal and toe-poked her effort past Sioned Hughes-Williams in goal but Bethel instantly responded.

Good build up play in midfield by Llio Emyr and Beca Williams resulted in Erin Maloney being set free and her strike towards the near post somehow squeezed past the Quay keeper.

Nomads again got their necks in front before half time. A poor free kick delivery was heading straight towards the Bethel keeper but unfortunately, Hughes-Williams lost her footing and the ball was tapped into the net again by Nellist.

The second half was a different story – one-way traffic and Bethel were at the wheel.

Bethel equalised immediately as Beca Williams hit a thunderbolt on the volley from the edge of the area that hit the back of the net via the bar.

The introduction of Shannon Jones and Jenna Allsup gave Bethel a welcome boost as the intensity rose and Quay struggled to cope with the pressure of the hosts.

Maloney got her second and put her side ahead as she picked up the ball on the left wing, beat one defender before foiling another and smashing a shot past the helpless keeper.

Shannon Jones added a fourth for the hosts and her first in Bethel colours. The visiting defender missed the ball in the air, Shannon controlled the ball and her powerful shot low to the keeper’s right nestled in the bottom corner and gave the hosts breathing space.

Quay came close late on, but after the ball had beaten the Bethel keeper, Kelly Jones was there to clear.

Teenager Catrin Evans and super-fit veteran Meinir Thomas are not far off 40 years apart in age – but the pair proved their equal value to Amlwch by scoring four goals apiece today.

The Division Two leaders, as expected, rattled up a massive win over bottom side Holywell, but the visitors deserve great credit for never stopping trying and, as ever, playing with smiles on their faces.

These are early days for the Wellwomen – better times will come their way.

Amlwch were without joint top-scorer Lexi Crawley and midfield maestro Cerys Gadd, yet still posed a constant goal threat, led by quadruple queens Evans and Thomas.

Ffion Owen struck twice to move onto 16 goals for the campaign, while there were also doubles for Paige Williams, Gail Manning, Shannon Thomas and Ceri Slaney.

Defender Carol Lewis netted a very popular goal. It was just her second ever for the club, following her breaking the duck earlier this term against Caernarfon.

Beth Smith completed the scoring, being credited with the goal despite the ball going in off a defender.

Caitlin Hadaway was named player of the match for Holywell by the opposition.

A thrilling game saw an unlikely star emerge in Llanberis four-goal hero Awel Fflur Ellis.

Better known as a defender in Bethesda’s Division Two title-winning side last season, Awel joined the Darans this term and proved her worth in scoring goals as well as stopping them at Pwllheli today.

Beris led 3-1 at half time and went 4-1 up before Pwllheli fought back, but it was the visitors who claimed the points over a depleted home team.

Ellis’ four-goal haul was added to by Indie Hassall, while Stacey Sansome hit three and Lia Roberts a single for the hosts.
