Records tumble for North Wales Road Runners in fast Conwy Half Marathon

North Wales Road Runners celebrated a great turnout of some 34 athletes at the popular Conwy Half Marathon last Sunday, with two members winning their age categories, and 12 claiming either course or personal best times,

Husband and wife team Martin and Carla Green were the pick of the team with both runners claiming course records, and winning their respective age groups, with Kevin Slattery finishing second in his veteran age category.

Martin was sixth overall and first M45 in 1 hour 14 mins 44 secs over this very hilly course around the Great Orme.

And for Carla, this was her best half marathon time for about 18 months, finishing as 7th female, and 1st F45 winner in 1.32.12.

Other club results included: Gun times and chip timesJonathan Kettle with a new course PB in 16th and 2nd M45 1.17.13/1.17.11, Rory Middleton 50th 1.23.46/1.23.42, Mark Jessett 63rd in 1.25.15/1.25.11, Stephen Bozier with a new PB in 117th place 1.31.18/1.31.12, Kevin Slattery finished 135th and was 2nd M60 in 1.32.17/1.32.09.

Steve Roberts was 156th in 1.33.27/1.32.36, Stuart Culverhouse earned a new course PB 183rd in 1.34.47/1.34.40, Gethin Wyn Jones was 204th in 1.35.59/1.35.55, Ben Hudson also claimed a new course PB in 287th place in 1.39.54/1.38.59, Richard Scamans was 303rd in 1.40.32/1.39.39, Steve Poupart also claimed a new course PB in 315th in 1.41.04/ 1.40.10, Daniel Owens, running with guide Anthony Parvin, was 389th in 1.43.25/1.43.22 and Tom Gibbs was 570th in 1.48.31/1.48.17.

Kay Hatton was 103rd female in 1.50.56/1.50.51, followed by Sarah Ferguson Hudson 105th female in 1.51.03/1.48.39 for a new course PB, Tony Gibson was 691st in 1.51.30/1.50.12, Hannah Griffiths was 123rd female in 1.52.27/1.52.07 for a course PB, with Lesley Goodson 137th female in 1.53.16/1.51.24, and Vicky Taylor 212th female in 1.58.27/1.56.02.

Veteran Don Hale claimed a new course PB, finishing 912th in 1.58.33/1.58.28, Len Jackson was 922nd in 1.58.49/1.58.45, Helen Hannam gained a deserved new course PB as 234rd female in 1.59.29/1.56.46, Jon Evans ran as an excellent two-hour pacer in 1023rd in 2.02.25/1.59.43, Robert Fryer was 1064th in 2.03.58/2.00.17, Kelly Alford was 358th female in 2.06.29/2.02.36, Cai Roberts finished 1179th in 2.08.22/2.04.30, Michael Hayton was 1235th in 2.10.46/2.10.40.

Joni Stubbs-Thrush was another good pacer as 476th female in 2.12.25/2.08.49. Mandy Owen was 494th female in 2.13.14/2.09.21, Josie Davies finished as 621st female in 2.18.53/2.14.11, and Rachel Morris enjoyed a super run, knocking an amazing 20 minutes off her previous best time to record an incredible new PB of 2.23.31/2.20.54 as 707th female. Charlie Owen also ran steadily, finishing in 1491st place in 2.31.46/2.25.13.

*In the junior fun run, which was also part of the Conwy event, Rachel Morris’s two children, Mia and Jack, took part in the one-mile dash, with Mia finishing second.

INTERNATIONAL CALL-UP FOR MARTIN GREEN

North Wales athlete Martin Green galloped around Aintree last Saturday when he was called-up to represent Wales in the British and Irish Masters International event, a major 8k cross country race, that included a host of top veteran athletes from England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Martin eventually finished 63rd out of 93 starters and was 15th in his MV45 age category. Former North Wales female runner Gemma Moore also ran for Wales in the Ladies event.

PARKRUN ROUNDUP

PONT Y BALA

Two North Wales athletes took part in the Pont y Bala parkrun last Saturday with 54 starters, and both finished in the top six.

Jon Evans had a brilliant run and said he was dreaming of glory before he was eventually overtaken by young pup Jack Hanmer-Roberts, who eventually went on to win the event in 21 mins 37 secs.

Jon finished 2nd and was 1st MV50 cat winner in a fast time of 22.04. And Jon’s club colleague Lesley Goodson also enjoyed a great run as the 2nd female runner in 6th place overall in 24.08 for 1st VW55 cat.

PENRHYN CASTLE

Michael (Pat) Finnie was the only club representative at Penrhyn Castle among 157 runners last week finishing in 21st place in 23.55 for 3rd MV60 vet.

CONWY

Nine North Wales Road Runners competed in the Conwy Parkrun on Saturday with two members claiming new PBs, and three winning their age categories.

Amidst a great turnout of some 343 runners, Mark Jessett was again the first club man home in 7th spot in 19.45 for 2nd SM30 cat. Gethin Wyn Jones continued his massive improvement to finish 12th in 20.53 for 3rd SM30 cat.

Ben Hudson was one of the PB winners finishing in 13th place in 21.10 for 3rd MV40 cat, and Carla Green was the 2nd female runner and 1st VW45 in 21.33.

Young Joe Culverhouse, being paced around the course by his dad Stuart, recorded another deserved PB and won his JM10 age cat in 23.12 in 38th place overall. Sarah Ferguson-Hudson made it a great family double success by winning her VW40 age cat in 23.33 as 7th female.

And partially sighted member Daniel Owens, running with guide Anthony Parvin, enjoyed a steady run in 59th place and was 2nd M25 cat, and promising youngster Jack Griffith finished in 170th position in 28.50.
