Six top weekend performances in North Wales football

1. Welsh Alliance Take Stock Van Hire Cup r2
Penmaenmawr Phoenix 0 Aberffraw 1

Given Aberffraw’s amazing ability to pull off cup upsets regardless of their league position was this result really a surprise?

Well yes it was, with Phoenix being top of Welsh Alliance Division Two and in fine form, while Berffro currently occupy bottom spot.

However, the Anglesey side had pushed Llanrug all the way the weekend before in the Welsh Cup before losing 1-0 in extra time, so the Cae Cynlas outfit travelled to Cae Sling with confidence.

And that belief was well-placed, as top-scorer Nathan Moore’s first-half goal was enough to secure yet another cup shock for Berffro.

Mention too, for Aberffraw keeper Caron Hughes, who produced some great stops and was named man of the match by the opposition.

2. Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Division One
Llandudno Amateurs Reserves 1 Penrhyn Bay Dragons 2

All hail Penrhyn Bay for earning their first win of the season.

And it was at the expense of a Llandudno outfit which on its day is one of Division One’s strongest teams.

Having said that, Dragons had held Amateurs Reserves 3-3 at the start of the campaign, so went into the return with nothing to fear.

And it all ended in smiles for a team which had lost their previous two games 11-1 and 6-0 in cups.

Solomon Dickens and Morgan Groome struck for the Dragons, who moved three points clear of the basement.

3. Welsh Cup round two
Mold Alexandra 8 Llanrug United 1

Considering this was a meeting between two tier-three teams, it was an excellent result for WNL Premier Division side Mold over Llanrug of the Welsh Alliance top-flight.

This tie at Alyn Park stood 0-0 at half time, but it was a totally different story in the second stanza as Mold piled on the goals.

Danny Warren (3), Matty Pierce, Kev Day, Dan Lloyd, Henry Carver and Conner Kendrick shared the home tally.

4. Cymru Premier
Barry Town United 0 Connah’s Quay Nomads 4

Unbeaten Nomads produced a clinical performance at the home of previous leaders Barry in this battle of the top two.

While the hosts had lost their undefeated status in a 4-1 crash at Caernarfon the previous weekend, Gavin Chesterfield’s side were still expected to put up a stern defence of a home record without a single loss.

However, Nomads came up with a mighty display to pocket the points, Michael Wilde and Jamie Insall with two goals apiece.

5. Welsh Alliance League Division One
Penrhyndeudraeth 3 Bodedern Athletic 2

After winning just two of their previous 10 league games and getting hammered 8-1 at Holyhead Hotspur in the Welsh Cup in midweek, Penrhyndeudraeth supporters may have feared the worst when last season’s Division One runners-up Bodedern arrived at Maes-y-Parc.

However, the home side rose to the occasion to take three massive points, Huw Quaeck (2) and Jack Jones with the goals, while Dean Redmond and Tom Wood ensured Boded ran their hosts close.

6. Welsh Alliance Division Two
Holyhead Town 0 Barmouth & Dyffryn 2

Llion Owen and Ben Fisher struck to earn Barmouth and Dyffryn an impressive 2-0 result at Holyhead.

Although a few places lower than Town in Division Two, Bermo’s away form had been decent, but the Harbourmen had previously been beaten just once at home this term.
