Tuesday action: Porthmadog hit seven in Welsh Cup, Bala and Nomads reach semis of Nathaniel MG, Bay edge past Bangor

Mel McGinness and John Owen both struck twice as Port hit seven to advance to round two of the Welsh Cup and a home tie with Gresford Athletic.

Having this first round clash twice postponed and losing home advantage was probably crucial to any ambitions Welsh Alliance underdogs Llanberis had of causing an upset.

On 28 minutes Port went ahead. McGinness and Rhys Alun combined well in midfield and the former raced on to a quality through ball and fired past the advancing keeper.

Close to the break, a good Port move down the left saw Owen firing a cracker from a narrow angle. Initially keeper Will Williams pulled off a great save to divert the shot on to the upright but McGinness was on hand to fire the rebound home from close range.

Owen made it 3-0 10 minutes into the second half. A seemingly casual break from just inside the Llanberis half saw Owen carry past defenders and into the box and, though his initial shot was kept out, he tapped the rebound into the net.

Port made it four on 69 minutes when a low ball was played into the box and a couple of touches later Rhys Alun netted from close range.

A few minutes later Owen found space in the box and drilled a low shot just inside the near post.

Rhys Alun provided the assist for Sion Parry to net at the near post before the last word went to Iwan Lewis – a great finish curling his shot into the top corner.

Prestatyn Town 1 Bala Town 2

Two goals in the last 20 minutes guided Cymru Premier 10-man Bala into the Nathaniel MG Cup semi-finals at the expense of long-time rivals Prestatyn.

The Cymru North hosts enjoyed the perfect start when they opened the scoring after 80 seconds.

Rob Hughes picked the ball up on the halfway line, drove forward and found Jack Kenny, whose shot was blocked into James Stead’s path – and he fired into the bottom corner.

The Lakesiders suffered another blow after 10 minutes when Nathan Burke was sent for an early shower after a clumsy tackle on the touchline.

Prestatyn took advantage of the extra man by swarming all over the opposition with flowing football, but despite this they were unable to add to their lead before half time. In fact, Bala could have gone in level, but from a good position Louis Robles struck wide of the far post.

The hosts remained dangerous after the break, but as the half wore on Bala showed plenty of character and began to threaten more themselves.

Pressure was mounting and finally the Lakesiders’ efforts paid off on the 71st minute.

A corner by Steven Leslie picked out Robles who outjumped his marker to bullet the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-1.

Bala were finishing the game strongly with fitness starting to show as they now looked for the winner.

And in the 89th minute, Leslie delivered a pinpoint ball into the area which came to Lassana Mendes, who instinctively found the back of the net.

In added time Jonny Spittle made an incredible block in the box to deny a goalbound Kenny equaliser.

The semi-final draw will take place on Thursday with Bala able to face Aberystwyth Town, Connah’s Quay or STM Sports.
