NEWFA Challenge Cup: Holywell hit 13, Brymbo 7 and it’s 6 apiece for Castell Alun and Brickfield on goal-packed night

Mark Connolly hit a hat-trick as Holywell Town romped to a 13-0 victory in the first round of the NEWFA Challenge Cup on Wednesday night.

Poor Bradley Park were swept aside as the Wellmen went goal crazy, summer signing Connolly, the former Bala Town and Rhyl attacking midfielder, leading the way.

Although suspended from playing league football over the Bangor City v FAW arbitration case, Holywell are still permitted to play in cup matches.

And they made the most of it at Halkyn Road, Charlie Hughes 2, Danny Dobbins 2, Josh Robertson 2, Jay Wilkes 2, Luke Edwards and Tony Roebuck making up the baker’s dozen.

Elsewhere, there were cracking wins for Caerwys and Coedpoeth United over illustrious names.

A Ryan Edge treble helped Caerwys to a 5-2 success at Bala Town, who fielded a reserves side, Tom Cumming and Deiniol Bower also on the mark for the North East Wales League visitors. Cai Aykroyd and Tom Lloyd replied.

And Welsh National League Division One outfit Coedy saw off Airbus 3-0, Curt Griffiths netting all three against a young Wingmakers team.

Matthew Harrison bagged four in Brickfield Rangers‘ 6-1 romp at Cefn Mawr Rangers, while Castell Alun Colts triumphed 6-0 at Rhosllanerchrugog.

Halkyn and Flint Mountain led Plas Madoc 2-0 at half time through goals from Pete Martin and David Walkiewicz (pen), but Ryan Roberts’ WNL Premier Division newcomers turned the tables in the second period and ended up 4-2 winners in extra time, Jordan Powell, Jamie Williams, Craig Roberts pen and Mike Jones their marksmen.

Ben Kearney 3, Billy New 2, Jake Clark and Jack Ford guided Brymbo to an emphatic 7-0 verdict at Lex.

And Mynydd Isa Spartans of WNL Division One did really well to eliminate Premier side Chirk AAA 3-2, Chris Layne, Mike Whales and Kieran Jones for the hosts. Louie Middlehurst and Hari Gould responding.
